List of nonprofits to receive millions from mobile phone company that generates donations through customers’ charges.
SAN FRANCISCO – January 10, 2008 – CREDO Mobile, the cellphone service of Working Assets, today announces its annual list of social-change organizations that will receive at least $3 million in donations that will be generated throughout the year from its customers’ charges.
Since its founding in 1985, the company has generated over $50 million for world-changing organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, Planned Parenthood and Greenpeace.
The diverse list of fifty organizations this year include the Center for Constitutional Rights, National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, Ms. Foundation for Women, Earthjustice, Project Vote and Iraq Veterans Against the War.
“Lots of companies give away money to organizations,” says CEO Laura Scher. “Our company was founded to provide funding for worthy but controversial organizations that many companies would shy away from.” Causes include gay and lesbian rights, reproductive freedom, and free and fair elections, among others.
"As one of our largest donors, CREDO Mobile is a major contributor to our successful grant-making and policy program," says Bob Scowcroft, executive director of Organic Farming Research Foundation, an organization that made the list for 2008.
In addition to a unique way of funding social-change organizations, the company also asks members to nominate nonprofits to be considered for the donations pool.
